Local Sister of Notre Dame celebrates 85 years

Sr. Kathleen Kieran, School Sister of Notre Dame, of Wilton, Conn. celebrated her 85th anniversary of profession —her golden Jubilee — Saturday, May 3, at Villa Notre Dame.

Sister Kathleen is only the second in the history of her order to reach this milestone.

She held a leadership position at Holy Name of Jesus in Providence from 1951 to 1957. She currently serves in prayer and presence at Villa Notre Dame.

There are more than 600 sisters in the Atlantic-Midwest Province of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, ministering in 34 dioceses in the United States and in countries around the world. Many of the sisters in the Atlantic-Midwest Province are educators, but many others work in other capacities to better their local communities and the world.

It was 175 years ago that Caroline Gerhardinger and two other women began a common religious life in Bavaria, Germany, educating poor girls because of their belief that the mother, the first educator, had a key role in the renewal of society.
