Brother John Martin O’Brien FSC, 88

NORTH KINGSTOWN — Christian Brother John Martin O’Brien, 88, of Scalabrini Nursing Home, North Kingstown, died September 16.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John P. and Elizabeth (Davidson) O’Brien. He entered the Brothers of the Christian Schools at Barrytown, NY, in 1949 and received the religious habit of the order in September of that year. He pronounced his final vows in 1955 in Troy, NY.

Brother O’Brien received a bachelor of science degree in education from Providence College in 1949, a master’s degree in counseling from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. in 1952 and a master’s degree in theology from Manhattan College, Bronx, NY in 1969.

Brother O’Brien ministered as a teacher in New York, Michigan and Connecticut, and served as the the Associate Director of the Diaconate Program for the Diocese of Brooklyn, NY. He also served as Assistant Director of Religious Education for the Diocese of Norwich, CT, from 1969-1978, and as Director of Religious Education at St. Joseph Church, Hope Valley for many years until his retirement in 2000.

He is survived by three brothers, William O’Brien of Natick, MA, Robert O’Brien of Johnston and James O’Brien of Dover, NH. He was the brother of the late George E. O’Brien.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated September 22 at Star of the Sea Chapel, Christian Brothers Center, Narragansett. Burial was in the Brothers Cemetery.
