Kailey Louise Smith, a senior at The Prout School, has been appointed to the US Military Academy (USMA) at West Point. “We are delighted for Kailey and her family and we are so proud of this accomplished young woman for her decision to serve our country,” said David J. Estes, principal of The Prout School. According to the West Point website, each year thousands of high school students apply for admission to USMA, but only a few are accepted. A composite of recent classes indicate an acceptance rate of less than eight percent for women applying to the USMA at West Point. Smith was the recipient of Congressmen Langevin’s principal nomination. She will be part of the Class of 2021. At Prout, Smith is the senior class president and a member of the National Honor Society. She is, or has been, captain of the outdoor track team, the junior varsity volleyball team and the swim team and has earned a varsity letter in all three sports. Smith is also the section leader, flute, for The Prout School band and was named to the All State Senior Orchestra, violin, by the Rhode Island Music Education Association. She was also a delegate to the American Legion’s Girls State and volunteers for Special Olympics, Rhode Island.
