Sister Mary Evangela McAleer, R.S.M.

CUMBERLAND — Sister Mary Evangela McAleer, 83, a Sister of Mercy and a former music teacher, glee club moderator, and drama coach, died on March 29 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland. Born in Providence, she was named Mary Theresa and was the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth (Taylor) McAleer.

Sister Evangela was a graduate of St. Xavier Academy, class of 1946. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1946 and professed her perpetual vows on August 16, 1952. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the Catholic Teachers College and a Master of Science degree in music from Boston University. She pursued further graduate work at Wesley College of Music and studied at Salve Regina University.

Sister began her teaching ministry at SS. Peter and Paul School, Fall River and was later assigned to St. Patrick School in Providence, Holy Family High School in New Bedford, and Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, Mass. After teaching at Feehan for 30 years, Sister went to St. Mary - BayView in Riverside where she assisted in both development and athletics.

In addition to her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy, she leaves a sister, Elizabeth Martins in Virginia; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth McAleer; several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late James, Joseph, and Robert McAleer.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, April 2 in Mount St Rita Chapel, Cumberland with interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
