Sister Norma Orme, R.S.M

CUMBERLAND — Sister Norma Orme, 99, Sister Mary Jocelyn, R.S.M., died on February 5 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre in Cumberland. She was the daughter of Stuart and Charlotte (Bowdoin) Orme.

Sister Norma entered the Sisters of Mercy Community on September 8, 1934 and professed vows on August 15, 1940 and attended Cleary School and St. Xavier’s in Providence. She pursued higher education at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Sister Norma taught at Tyler and Cleary schools as well as at St. Xavier’s in Providence and St. Mary Academy - Bay View.

In September 2014, Sister Norma celebrated 80 years of Religious Life as a Sister of Mercy, with 20 of those years dedicated to the people of Belize, where she was a high school educator. She considered the students of St. Catherine Academy to be her girls, and she often expressed how proud she was of them to her peers in Rhode Island.

For a short time, Sister also served in Honduras as teacher, principal and instructor of Spanish. Upon her return to the U.S. in the late seventies, Sister was on the staff at Salve Regina in Newport as assistant professor of modern language.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, February 11 at Mount St. Rita Chapel in Cumberland, with interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
