Statement from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence on Charter Schools

Posted

PROVIDENCE — Despite recent reports in the media, the Diocese of Providence is not opposed to charter schools in principle.

The diocese has, in fact, several other agreements with charter schools already in place including St. Mary Broadway school building leased to Paul Cuffee School in Providence, St. Charles Borromeo in Providence has a lease with ACE, Academy for Career Exploration, as well as sales of former school buildings, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Central Falls and St. Patrick Church in Cumberland.

The decision not to renew a lease is not made lightly and is done after a lengthy consultation process. The diocese will consider future arrangements on a case-by-case basis depending on how they affect our local Catholic schools.
