Assumption youth have a Mass of their very own

PROVIDENCE - Special children's Masses are held monthly at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Providence for children in grades 4-6 who have made their First Communion and are enrolled in the Religious Education Program. The Mass is given by children. Readings are dramatized, dynamic songs are selected, and the homily is crafted to be understood by children as well as their parents. Chihldren sit in the front pews for better interaction with the priest during the homily.

The Mass is even bi-lingual, mainly in English but with parts in Spanish.

At Assumption, children's Mass preparation class replaces the standard religious education grades 4, 5, and 6 curricula. Class began in September with the purpose of emphasizing the importance of the Eucharist and the Eucharistic celebration. Mass preparation began in November, when children were allowed to choose from among three important ministries: altar servers, readers, and choir.

The next two scheduled Masses for Children are April 14 and May 5, both at 4 p.m. Snacks and refreshments are served following services. All children are invited, along with their parents.

Among those involved in this ministry are Religious Education Director Miriam Hidalgo; Father Gildardo Suarez, pastor of the church; Music Director Alejandro Ottich and assistants Jenny Mercado, Amanda Salazar, and Liliana Jorge.

Assumption Church is located at 791 Potters Avenue, Providence. For further information or directions, call 941-3768.
