On Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans smiled humbly in the glow of admiration as the audience of more than 1,200 filling the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul broke into applause. This week, Bishop Evans celebrated the 10th anniversary of his ordination as the seventh auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Providence.
In his address to the crowd on that special day in Advent, Bishop Evans paid tribute to Pope Benedict XVI, whom he referred to as “Peter in our midst.”
He expressed his own humility at having been chosen for the position by opening his remarks with a quote the pope delivered upon being elected Supreme Pastor of the Universal Church: “[I am a] simple, humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord. The fact that the Lord can work and act even with in sufficient means consoles me and above all I entrust myself to your prayers.”
“First and last, I remain a priest of the Lord, not through any merit of my own, and surely not as a career choice,” said Auxiliary Bishop Evans. “I believe that each and every priest can witness to the Lord’s own words that we have not so much chosen Him as He has chosen us.”
