Blessed Fulton Sheen, pray for us

In mid-June of this year, the Supreme Court of the State of New York rendered the decision that the body of the late Archbishop Fulton Sheen was to be returned to his home diocese of Peoria, Illinois, where the cause for his canonization has been opened. Sheen died in late 1979, after which his body was placed in the crypt of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where it’s been entombed for nearly 40 years.

Since that court decision in mid-June, Pope Francis has given his approval to a miracle directly attributed to Sheen’s heavenly intercession. This will lead to the beloved archbishop’s beatification in Peoria (probably later this year). The miracle involved a newborn infant who was considered stillborn at birth, and who was without a pulse for the first 61 minutes of his life outside the womb. He is now a happy — and completely healthy — 8-year-old boy living with his family in Washington, Illinois.

For decades, Archbishop Fulton Sheen touched the lives of millions of people around the world — Catholic and non-Catholic — through his TV programs, his many books, his talks, his retreats, his conferences and his old radio programs. Now, he also touches the world through his powerful heavenly intercession. For that, we should all be grateful.

Blessed Fulton Sheen, pray for us.
