Call for complete Iraq withdrawal now

Posted

To the Editor:

The members of Pax Christi Rhode Island, a Catholic peace movement, encourage the Catholics of Rhode Island to call their representatives and senators in Washington and urge them to call for a complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, which includes a dismantling of permanent bases there.

Also urge them to call for Iraqi oil to be left in Iraqi hands and not in the hands of U.S. oil companies.

As long as the U.S. does not openly declare that it intends to withdraw and dismantle all its military installations, and to leave the oil in the hands of Iraqis, our young men and women there will continue to be looked upon as intruders and will be the targets of insurgents.

Pope John Paul II said that war against Iraq was illegal, immoral and unjust. It still is. Pope Benedict said that nothing good could come of the U.S. war in Iraq.

The United States has no God-given right to control the world with all its resources. God calls us to serve the poor of the world, not to domineer.
