Father Edmund Adams, a monk of Portsmouth Abbey, died peacefully after a brief illness in Newport Hospital on Christmas Eve, aged 77.

Christened Thomas Frederick Adams, he was born in Cambridge, Mass. He is predeceased by his family: his father Frederick Johnstone Adams, of London England; his mother Keith Folger Adams of Bronxville, N.Y.; and brother Benjamin Folger Adams of Albuquerque, N.M.

Tom entered the then Portsmouth Priory School as a second-former and eventually went on to earn his doctorate at the University of Washington in Seattle. Before coming back to the Abbey, he worked as Assistant Professor of English at University of Toledo (Ohio). He made his profession as a monk at the Abbey in 1984 and was ordained a priest in 1989.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered for him on Friday, January 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the Abbey Church with burial following in the Abbey cemetery.
