CRANSTON — Father Eugene J. McKenna, a senior priest in the Diocese of Providence, will be honored by the Rhode Island State Council of Churches during its annual Heroes of Faith Breakfast.

Father McKenna will be one of seven individuals to be recognized during the annual event, which is designed to bring together members of many different faith communities.

He will be presented with the George Dickson Kenney Stewardship Award during the breakfast, which will be held at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet, 60 Rhodes Place, Cranston, on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

In an interview with Rhode Island Catholic, Father McKenna said he was surprised, but very pleased, to hear from the RISCC that he would be awarded.

He said he has served for many years on the Council’s Faith and Order Commission.

“I’m the longest-serving member of that particular commission,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed working with my fellow members and the work that we do.”

He said he has long been actively involved in council activities, such as participating in the Poverty Institute and promoting a dialogue of faith at the State House.

“I’ve gotten an awful lot out of my membership on the Faith and Order Commission and my friendship with my fellow members. I was glad to see that the Catholic Church got recognized.”
