Hispanics fill cathedral for Guadalupe celebration

PROVIDENCE – On December 12 the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, seat of the Diocese of Providence, was filled with joyful songs and colorful clothes as Hispanics from every corner of the state along with many faithful from different cultures gathered to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patron of the Americas.

Before Mass, Hispanic Youths, lead a Rosary for Life. This was the first official activity of the new Hispanic Pro-Life club for youth.

After the Rosary, the solemn Mass was presided over by the Bishop Thomas J. Tobin along with many priests and Deacons.

Many attending the Mass came with their colorful ethnic clothes representing many countries from Central and South America.

Also a diocesan choir was formed with members of St. Patrick, St. Teresa, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, in Providence and St. John the Baptist in Pawtucket along with guest musicians from Providence. The Homily was preached in English by Bishop Tobin and in Spanish by father Hugo Carmona.

After the Mass, people proceeded to the basement, where there was an hour long program of dancers, children performing songs to Our Lady and plenty of ethnic foods and drinks.

The program was coordinated by the Diocesan Guadalupe committee in collaboration with the diocesan offices of Hispanic Ministry, Family Life and The Hispanic Liturgy Committee.
