LETTER TO THE EDITOR

In memory of a great pastor

To the editor:

Today we are mourning the loss of a good friend and a special priest. He served 52 years in his ministry of God’s people. Although he grew up in Pawtucket, his heart was centered in Woonsocket, serving as pastor of Holy Family parish for 26 years. Father Edward St-Godard gave so very much to his Church. He never turned down an offer to give a homily at any church, be it Catholic or any other religion. He was open to ecumenism and we could see how gifted he was in this area.

He had a special talent in trying to unite these many different and diverse religions. He always said that “All may be one.” And he truly felt this way was following in the footsteps of Christ.

He practiced what he preached in bringing all these religious leaders together at our many Thanksgiving Interfaith Services at Holy Family parish.

I was fortunate to have worked for him and also to have known him. He taught me so much. We, who loved him, felt the pain he was going through in these last few years. With the pain of cancer, he tried to continue, even beyond his 77th birthday. I don’t think he really wanted to retire.

He did so much for Holy Family parish in keeping us in good financial condition, and conveying his many years of spiritual direction to all our parishioners.

Dear Father Ed, may you now have freedom of pain, and may you be at peace. May God reward you for all your heartfelt endeavors, given to us all in love.
