Interfaith Leadership Respond to Executive Order on Immigration

Posted

(PROVIDENCE, R.I.)- On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 2 Rhode Island religious leaders offered their response to an order that has created anxiety and concern throughout the state's immigrant community.

The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, Rev. Dr. Donald C. Anderson, Executive Minister of the Rhode Island State Council of Churches, Rabbi Alan Flam of the Rhode Island Board of Rabbis and many other clergy from various religious groups gathered in front of the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul to discuss their concerns relative to ‘Executive Order 08-01: Illegal Immigration Control Order’ issued by the Governor that targets a vulnerable population in Rhode Island.

The goal of hosting such an event was to "express their prayers and spiritual support to all those who lives are touched by the intense immigration debate taking place in our State and to stress that religious leaders can and should be a moderating, rational voice in the midst of a very emotional and divisive debate."

Complete coverage from today's event will be published in the April 10, 2008 edition of Rhode Island Catholic
