PROVIDENCE — The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized La Salle Academy student Matthew Poirier as a semi-finalist in this year’s competition. Poirier is one of 16,000 Semifinalists who will compete for one of the 7,500 National Merit Scholarships.

Poirier’s stellar academic record, having consistently earned First Honors with Distinction and as a member of the National and Spanish Honor Societies, paired with his values, character and leadership are a tremendous source of pride for the school community.

La Salle Academy Principal Donald Kavanagh also recently announced that Tyler L. Gillette has been named a Commended Student in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to this senior.

About 34,000 Commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2019 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
