On Friday, December 1, the Kent County YMCA knitting group gathered at Atria Harborhill assisted living facility in East Greenwich to present 1,538 hand-knit blankets, hats, mittens and baby items to nonprofit organizations that support families, children and pregnant women. Among the 13 recipients of donations were the Mother of Life Center, a non-diocesan Catholic pregnancy center, St. Gabriel’s Call, the diocesan ministry to support pregnant mothers and their families, Mary House, a ministry of St. Patrick Church and McAuley Ministries, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. According to coordinator Georgia McDermott, who founded the group 17 years ago, the 25 women meet throughout the year to knit items and present them to organizations in early December every year. To date, they have donated more than 3,000 afghan blankets.
