On Monday we celebrated Memorial Day, honoring those men and women who have served in the armed forces in the past as well as those who are currently serving in the military. There is a certain comradery among veterans that transcends wartime and continues on after the fighting is over. These veterans have much to teach us about their experiences as well as the reality of problems in the world. One of the things that many veterans share in common is a strong belief in God, which continued in their lives after the service.
Many soldiers have been in the service of the United States Army for a short period of time, but they are also part of God’s army through their baptism and confirmation. The same virtues that make for a good soldier very much apply to being a follower of Jesus Christ, i.e., fidelity, honor, steadfastness, obedience, fortitude and willingness to pledge their love for God and country.
Today, we seek to honor God’s sons and daughters who have served or who are serving our country. We are reminded that because of their service we can live in safety. We ask God to abundantly bless those who have previously served, and reward their service time in every way. May they gain earthly and heavenly blessings from their unselfish love of their country as we pause this week to remember those who are currently serving and we ask the Lord to provide them with his protection, strength and peace. May God abundantly provide for all their needs and enable them to overcome every personal and professional obstacle, as well as protect their families from hurt and harm. May each of our veterans feel honored not just today but every day.
