PROVIDENCE — On December 5, Providence College (PC) announced that they were recently ranked 6th in the United States for semester-long study abroad in the category of Master’s Colleges and Universities. The designation was released in the annual “Open Doors” report conducted by the Institute of International Education (IIE), and covers the 2017-18 academic year, the latest year reported.
“Semester-length study abroad resonates strongly with the academic and professional interests of our diverse student body,” said Joe Stanley, Dean of Global Education at PC. “In particular, we’ve seen participation in global internships become an increasingly crucial component of the semester abroad experience. These opportunities cultivate vital cross-cultural competencies while yielding significant returns on investment after graduation. PC’s commitment to equity, particularly through our Santander Diversity Scholarships, also ensures study abroad is an opportunity that champions diversity and inclusivity.”
The report showed PC with 343 students who spent a semester studying abroad during the 2017-18 academic year. That amounted to approximately 35% of the College’s junior class. According to the report, study abroad participation grew nationally by 3.8% overall from the previous year. The top ten countries visited were: the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, China, Ireland, Australia, Costa Rica and Japan.
