Father Ronald J. Bengford, signs his name on one of the Spanish roof tiles that make up Sacred Heart parish’s new roof while longtime parishioner Henry Vanasse looks on. The original roof lasted for 80 years. The parish hopes that this new roof will be like a time capsule and provide a link between future generations and today’s parishioners. The 10”x13” tiles were sold for $10 each. The proceeds helped finance the roof’s construction. Initially limited to parishioners, the tile sale quickly drew interest and support from people across the state who had connections to the parish.

A worker from Apollo Roofing Company installs a signed roof tile at Sacred Heart parish in Woonsocket.
When they needed to replace the church’s roof the Woonsocket parish decided to sell tiles to parishioners and others with a connection to the parish. Parishioners wrote short messages and signed the tiles. Many people dedicated tiles to deceased loved ones or in the name of families who have been members of Sacred Heart parish for generations.
