ANNUAL CHRISM MASS

Recommitment to their vocation

Posted

During the annual Chrism Mass celebrated April 10 at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Providence, Bishop Robert C. Evans invited priests of the diocese to reaffirm their commitment to priestly service by renewing promises made on their ordination day.

“The Church we love and cherish asks us once more to renew that same love and commitment to those for whom we have been ordained and to whom we are sent, for priesthood is not an invitation to self-fulfillment but a sacrament of self-giving,” said Bishop Evans. “Please note that as we renew our commitment to priestly service we are challenged to say no to anything that would obscure the light of Christ from shining through us and onto our brothers and sisters, who shortly will be asked to pray that we remain faithful to our first love.”

The sacramental oil is used in baptisms, in anointing the sick, confirmations, priestly and episcopal ordinations and in the dedication of churches.
