WEST WARWICK — Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans celebrated Mass at Sacred Heart Church this past weekend, praying with the faithful of the parish for its pastor, Father Richard Bucci, who last week was seriously injured in a car accident in Lynn, Massachusetts.
According to Bishop Evans, Father Bucci remains in serious condition, and was expected to undergo spinal surgery Monday.
Following the single car crash on March 3, in which Father Bucci’s Acura veered off the Lynnway and struck a sign, causing significant damage to the vehicle, the pastor was airlifted to the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington for treatment.
In his homily Sunday, Bishop Evans mentioned receiving a text message from the brother of Father Bucci which indicated that the priest is at least somewhat aware.
“He’s responding to stimuli — if you speak to him, he can squeeze your hand,” Bishop Evans said.
“Of course, prayers for Father Bucci and his family are greatly appreciated.”
For the present time, Father Gregory Stowe, pastor of St. Joseph Church (which is across the street), has been appointed to administer Sacred Heart.
Parishioners gathered at the 9 a.m. Mass on Sunday offered their prayers and wishes for Father Bucci’s recovery.
Anthony and Anne Marie Tarilli have been members of Sacred Heart Parish for over 40 years.
“I’m 80 years old and I’ve never learned as much about the faith as I have with Father Bucci,” said Anne Marie.
“God sent him to our parish. He’s such a blessing. He just believes so much and teaches it so clearly.” The Rhode Island Catholic will continue to update readers as new information regarding Father Bucci’s condition becomes available; in the meantime, the faithful are encouraged to keep him and his family in their prayers.
