In late February, the College of Cardinals convened at the Vatican to formally approve decrees of canonization for four male saints from Malta, Poland, Brazil and the Netherlands, and one female saint from France.

George Prece (1439-82), a priest from Malta who founded the Societas Doctrinae Christianae; Szymon of Liprica (1439-82), a Polish priest of the Order of Friars Minor; Charles of St. Andrew (1821-93), a Dutch priest of the Congregation of the Passion; Antonio de Santa Ana (1739-1822), a Brazilian priest of the Discalced Friars Minor, and founder of the Convent of Conceptionist Sisters Recolhimento da Luz; and Sister Marie-Eugene de Jesus, the French-born foundress of the Institute of the Sisters of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
