Sister Catherine O’Shea, CND

YONKERS, N.Y. — Sister Catherine O’Shea, a member of the Congregation of Notre Dame, died at St. John’s Hospital, Yonkers, N.Y. on December 30, 2015 at the age of 90. Born in Providence, Sister Catherine was the daughter of Mary Ellen (Sullivan) O’Shea and Patrick O’Shea. She completed her elementary school at St. Sebastian School and her secondary education at St. Mary’s Academy in Providence. She earned a Bachelor of Education degree from Catholic Teacher’s College in Providence. She continued her studies at Rhode Island College in Providence, Rhode Island and earned a masters degree in English.

Sister Catherine professed her first vows on August 20, 1947. She taught for over 60 years in elementary, secondary and adult education in Rhode Island and New York. Sister Catherine’s quiet, gentle presence and her genuine love and concern for all earned her a special place in the hearts of her students and all who knew her.

Sister Catherine is mourned by her community, the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame. She was predeceased in death by her parents, Patrick and Mary Ellen (O’Sullivan) O’Shea, her brother Joseph and an infant sister. She is survived by her nephew, Joseph O’Shea and her nieces Kathy O’Shea Hachigan , Patricia O’Shea and Sheila O’Shea.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Villa Notre Dame on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016 with burial in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Danbury, Conn.
