Sister Mary Cedric Crossley, R.S.M.

CUMBERLAND — Sister Mary Cedric Crossley, R.S.M., 88, died January 29 at St. Antoine Residence.

Born in Providence she was a daughter of the late Cedric and Bernadette (Bourbonnais) Crossley of Johnston. Sister Mary Cedric entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1945 and professed final vows on August 16, 1951. A graduate of St. Xavier Academy, Sister Mary Cedric attended Catholic Teacher College in Providence and pursued graduate studies in education and art at Boston College and Marywood College in Scranton, Pa. She taught in several diocesan elementary schools in Rhode Island. She coordinated religious education programs in West Warwick, Pawtucket and Cumberland. Sister Mary Cedric administered Mercy Lodge Retreat House in Cumberland.

A teacher, principal and administrator, Sister was also a talented artist who shared her knowledge of iconography through instruction and personal artistic creation. Sister Mary Cedric is remembered for her kindness and dedication in caring for her mother who was blind.

In addition to her religious community, Sister Mary Cedric is survived by her beloved sister and friend, Frances Linehan and numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Marie Hetherman and brothers Cedric, Richard, William and Edward Crossley.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on February 3 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland
