BALTIMORE — Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sister Mary Mark Carnes died June 26, at St. Rita Convent.
She was born in Dundalk, Md. and baptized Louise Carnes. She was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Frances Simpson Carnes. Sister Carnes entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1945 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1948 and her final profession of vows on Aug. 2, 1951.
Sister Carnes was a teacher and principal, serving for almost 50 years in North Carolina, Idaho, Oregon, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland. In the Diocese of Providence, she taught at St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence from 1978 to 1980.
Following her tenure as an educator, she served as an associate chaplain at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore from 2006 to 2007. From 2008 to the time of her death, she was a volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul Society of Baltimore. While residing at St. Rita Convent, Sister Carnes was also a prayer minister.
She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Marywood College, Scranton, Pa.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Samuel and Arthur; and four sisters, Mary Taber, Jean Gayle, Margaret Seibert and Frances Knight. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 30 at St. Rita Church, Dundalk. Burial was in Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery, Dundalk.
