Sister Mary Mercia Moran, RSM, 82

CUMBERLAND – Mercy Sister Mary Mercia Moran, 82, an elementary school educator, died April 27 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Baptized Johanna Moran in New York City, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Boland) Moran. She was a 1947 graduate of Father Young Memorial High School in New York City. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sep. 8, 1948 and professed her vows on Aug. 16, 1954.

Sister Moran earned a bachelor of science degree in education from the former Catholic Teachers College, Providence and a bachelor of music degree from Marywood College, Scranton, Pa. in 1970. She also pursued graduate studies at Rhode Island College. She began her teaching ministry at the former St. Patrick School, Providence, and subsequently served at St. Matthew School, St. Mary School and St. Brendan School, East Providence. Her last ministry was at Sacred Heart School, East Providence, where she taught from 1967 until her retirement in 1999.

Sister Moran is survived by a brother, James Moran of Katonah, N.Y.; and a sister, Eileen Wittig of Bayshore, N.Y. She was also the sister of the late Margaret, Mary and Thomas Moran.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 2 in the Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
