NET Ministries Retreat dates available

PROVIDENCE — NET Ministries is an international Catholic youth ministry that is committed to challenging young Catholics to love Christ and embrace the life of the Church. The organization’s acronym stands for National Evangelization Teams. Based in St. Paul, Minnesota, NET offers training in youth evangelization and leads approximately 1,000 retreats annually. Each year, young adult volunteers are sent out in teams across the United States to conduct middle school and high school retreats for Catholic teens. If you are interested in scheduling a retreat date for middle school or high school students in your parish or school for the 2019/2020 academic year within the Diocese of Providence (or Fall River) visit www.netusa.org/retreats, contact scheduling@netusa.org, or call Diane Castro at 401-792-8684 to schedule a retreat for the youth in your parish or school communities. Multi-parish retreats can be scheduled as well.

First Saturday Devotions held at St. Augustine Church

PROVIDENCE — St. Augustine Church, 639 Mt. Pleasant Ave., will hold First Saturday Devotions (in song) on the first Saturday of each month, until May. The next devotion is Saturday Feb. 2, with future devotions scheduled for March 2, April 6 and May 4. Devotions begin with the Sacrament of Reconciliation 3:45 p.m. – 5 p.m., the Holy Rosary in song at 4 p.m., private meditation on the mysteries of the Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and Mass with Holy Communion beginning at 5 p.m. The devotions will again be sponsored by the St. Augustine Council of the Knights of Columbus in conjunction with the Men of St. Joseph. All are invited.

A Mass for healing for all types of addictions to be celebrated

CHARLESTOWN — A Mass for healing for all types of addictions will be offered at St. James Chapel, 2079 Matunuck Schoolhouse Rd., on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. If you have an addiction, know someone who does, or have lost a loved one because of addiction, please come. The celebrant is Father Paul Desmarais, Pastor of St. Mary / St. James Parish. This Mass will be offered the first Sunday of each month through June 2019. National Day of Prayer for the African American, family

PROVIDENCE — The 30th Anniversary of the National Day of Prayer for the African American and African family will be held on Feb. 3. The National Day of Prayer for the African American and African Family was created by Father James Good, O.F.M., in 1989. It is a day set aside to give special thanks to God for families. The following parishes shared that the prayer will be offered at the following locations and Mass times: St. Michael Church, Providence, 9:30 a.m.; St. Patrick Church, Providence, 9 a.m.; Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Providence, 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (African Catholic Community).

Free Income Tax Preparation

PROVIDENCE — Amos House, 460 Pine St., a fully handicap-accessible agency, prepares free income tax returns for those who earned $55,000 or less in 2018. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evening appointments may be made through April 12th by calling 401-272-0220. Amos House will also host Saturday walk-in-only sessions from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on February 9, March 9 and April 13. Other free tax sites in R.I. and M.A. may be found by calling the number 211.

Be My Valentine Breakfast

WARREN — St. Alexander Church, 221 Main St., will host a “Be My Valentine Breakfast” on Sunday, Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. – noon. The menu includes a waffle station, eggs, sausage, ham, homemade homefries, pastries and muffins, fruit, juice, and coffee. Tickets are available at the door or sold before or after Mass.

Documentary ‘The Nuns, the Priests and the Bombs’ to be presented

PROVIDENCE — The anti-war documentary, “The Nuns, the Priests and the Bombs,” a documentary about daring Catholic anti-nuclear activists who risk long jail terms in their efforts to move the world away from the nuclear brink, will be presented at Friedman Auditorium, Metcalf Research Building, 190 Thayer St., on Monday, February 11, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. The film follows the activists’ legal efforts to justify their actions under international law and highlights the power of their moral conviction. A panel discussion will follow featuring the film’s director, Helen Young, investigative journalist Alex Nunes, and activist Frida Berrigan.

Tea party and hat contest

BRISTOL — The St. Elizabeth’s Holy Rosary Sodality will sponsor their annual Tea Party on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 1-3 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the “Tea Room” located in the Parish Auditorium, 577 Wood St. Tickets are limited and will not be sold at the door. For reservations, call Pauline at 253-7488. Many kinds of hot tea will be available for your choice, along with mini-sandwiches and tasteful sweets. There will be a hat contest. (Wearing hats is optional.) Prizes will be awarded for hats that are: Most Original; Most Beautiful and Most Likely to be seen at the Kentucky Derby.

Hope and Cope support group to meet

PORTSMOUTH — The St. Matthias Ministry Hope and Cope Support Group will meet on Sunday, Feb. 17 from 5 - 6 p.m. in the chapel meeting room, under the chapel, at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 E Main Road. If you know someone who is supporting a loved one or friend in need of recovery or currently in recovery yourself, then this group is for you. This program is free. No registration is required. Knights of Columbus to hold Blood Drive

PROVIDENCE — In conjunction with the RI Blood Center, the St. Thomas the Apostle Knights of Columbus Council 11684 will be holding a Blood Drive on Sunday, Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the St. Thomas church hall at 65 Fruit Hill Ave. Refreshments will be provided. Walk-ins are welcome. Appointments are not necessary.

St. Mary Church to host quarterly Mass for those in recovery

WEST WARWICK — On Sunday, Feb. 24, all are invited to attend a Mass for Those in Recovery in St. Mary Church, 68 Church St., at 5 p.m. This Mass includes the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Anyone whose health is seriously threatened by sickness or old age may receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
