Was my former marriage a valid one?

How do I go about finding out?

What’s involved in the process?

PROVIDENCE — The Tribunal Office of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence is offering informational seminars regarding the process of petitioning for a declaration of nullity of a former marriage, a process also known as annulment. Presentations by the Tribunal staff will include a basic overview and explanation of the process.

Very Rev. Ronald P. Simeone, judicial vicar said, “We are attempting to reach out to those Catholics who have been affected by the tragedy of divorce. This is a ministry of compassion, reconciliation, and restoration. Not every failed Catholic marriage can be declared null; however, there are many cases where it can be demonstrated that from the outset a given marriage was, in fact, invalid according to Church understanding of the sacrament. We would like to help divorced Catholics both understand and consider becoming involved in a process that could provide much emotional and spiritual healing.”

The Diocese of Providence assists pastors and other offices in their pastoral care to the married and divorced. The Tribunal, in accordance with the judicial and administrative procedures as required by the Code of Canon Law, examines prior marriages to clarify the parties' marital status and determine their freedom to remarry in the Catholic Church. The Tribunal also provides any canonical services, such as rescripts, decrees and dispensations needed as part of the pre-marriage investigation.

These sessions are being held regionally to facilitate the convenience of those interested and are open to the public. Sessions are free and no pre-registration is required. For further information or questions, contact the Tribunal office at 278-4666.
