Volunteers needed for free tax assistance program

PROVIDENCE – The Diocese of Providence's office of Community Service and Advocacy is once again preparing to conduct a free tax-filing program for the upcoming tax season. Last year, volunteers assisted more than 100 individuals in obtaining $100,000 in tax refunds and/ or deductions.

The program is designed to assist those households with combined total assets (earned income & savings) of less than $40,000 per year who usually file 1040A, 1040ez and Schedule A forms.

Since the service is free, it allows for a 100 percent dollar return on the individual’s taxes.

Volunteers are IRS-trained and certified, and will be able to help those eligible in obtaining Earned Income Tax Credit (Federal & State), Child Care Credit, Educators Expense Deduction and Rhode Island State Property Tax Credit.

Volunteers who are able to give a minimum of four hours a week during tax filing season – February 4-April 15, 2008 – are needed. The office is seeking to assist families in the Blackstone Valley, Kent County, Newport County and South County areas.

The training/certification classes begin on Tuesday. October 23. To register or for more information, call Rick Andrade at 401-728-0515.
