RI Catholic Schools are Lego Champs

For the second time the all-girls team at St. Mary Academy – Bay View has won the state FIRST® Lego® League championship competition.

On Saturday, January 14, one of Bay View’s two competing teams, S.M.A.R.T 2.0 won the state competition and qualified to compete in the international FIRST® Lego® League World Festival in April. The ten students on S.M.A.R.T. 2.0 also won individual $20,000 scholarships to Roger Williams University.

The B.A.R.C.S. team from St. Philomena School in Portsmouth were selected to be Rhode Island representative to submit their project idea for the Global Innovation Award.

This is an international award where projects will be submitted from teams from 25 different countries, with 20 projects chosen and those teams heading to Washington, D.C., to present to the National Patent Office and members of Congress.

This award has only be been given for the last two years and St. Philomena School has received the award both years. Team B.R.A.I.N. was chosen as the first alternate.

Our Lady of Mercy’s First Lego League team “Land Sharks” earned the Judges Award at the State Championship Robotics Championship. First Lego League allows students to explore the field of engineering with real world problems that need solving and robot design missions. Each year, teams must compete at qualifiers to proceed to the State Championships.
