Bishop Tobin appoints new Stewardship and Development director

PROVIDENCE — The Office of Planning and Financial Services has announced the appointment by Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of Timothy McCaig to the position of Director of the Office of Stewardship and Development for the Diocese of Providence.
This appointment reflects the work of a search committee charged with the screening of qualified applicants and the submission of a recommendation to the bishop. McCaig comes to the diocese from the Guidance in Giving Inc. fundraising firm and has most recently served as the director of Campaign Operations for the successful Grateful for God’s Providence capital campaign.
“During the past two-and-a-half years of his professional service Mr. McCaig has deepened his knowledge and familiarity of diocesan operations and of our diocesan priests and people,” said Rev. Msgr. Raymond B. Bastia, vicar for Planning and Financial Services. “We are happy to welcome Tim McCaig to our diocesan family and with his skills and enthusiasm and we look forward to his direction of the Office of Stewardship and Development.”
As director of Campaign operations of the capital campaign, McCaig hopes to bring his knowledge of the diocese to this new position.
“My experience in the campaign for the last two-and-a-half years is why I’m in this position today,” McCaig said in an interview with Rhode Island Catholic.
“I witnessed the dedication of our clergy, parish staff and volunteers up close, as well as the generosity of our donors. Rhode Island is such a tight-knit community and I think the relationships I’ve built with pastors, parish staff and donors will be invaluable as we move forward.”
For the coming year, McCaig plans to continue to focus on follow-up and redemption for the Grateful for God’s Providence capital campaign, revamp and renew the approach to the Catholic Charity Appeal, which the Diocese of Providence recently kicked off, and most importantly, to work diligently to be a resource to pastors, parish staff, fellow diocesan offices and Catholic schools — in all areas of Stewardship and Development.
Originally from Carteret, New Jersey, McCaig has a longstanding acquaintance with Rhode Island beginning with his education at Providence College. He shared that his education at PC helped to prepare him for his professional career in Catholic stewardship and fundraising.
“In addition to being a great school, I think Providence College has an amazing way of building up the individual through academics and extracurriculars, while also bonding the spirit of the individual within the family of students, faculty and Dominicans,” he said.
“A shared set of core Catholic values bind us together. It’s quite unique in that way and I think it gives you the confidence to set out and take on the world knowing you’ve grown as an individual within the larger family.”
Bishop Tobin has said that as Catholics, faithful are encouraged to share what they have with others and assist those less fortunate, not only financially but with their time and talents. McCaig hopes to share this important call through this new position.
“Our office serves as one of the conduits between our donors and those we can help every year, and it’s very important that we focus on facilitating that relationship so that resources provided by our donors are put to work for those in need.
“I want to sincerely thank Bishop Tobin for the opportunity to serve the Diocese of Providence and I appreciate him not holding it against me for being a New York Jets fan in New England.”
