Blessed Anniversaries: Sister Rose Maria Gallonio

Fifty women and men religious in the Diocese of Providence are celebrating anniversaries of 75, 70, 65, 60, 50 and 25 years of religious life in the year 2010. They will be honored on Sunday, April 18, 2010 at the 1:00 p.m. Mass in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Providence. Bishop Thomas J. Tobin will preside and deliver the homily.

A reception for the jubilarians and their guests will follow in the cathedral hall. The annual jubilee celebration is sponsored by the diocesan Office for Religious and the Council of Religious.

Sister Rose Maria Gallonio, RSM was born in Providence on March 28, 1917.

She graduated from Holy Ghost School and enrolled in St. Francis Xavier Academy, a high school for young women operated and staffed by the Sisters of Mercy. She graduated in June of 1935 and the following September 8th she entered the Sisters of Mercy. Sister professed her vows on August 15, 1938 at Mount St. Rita’s in Cumberland.

Sister was an elementary school teacher who taught in a number of diocesan schools including St. Michael’s in Providence from 1943 to 1965. She was St. Mary Academy’s elementary school librarian from 1965 until her retirement in 1994.

Sister currently resides at Mount St. Rita Health Centre in Cumberland and is engaged in the ministry of prayer.
