There is something very special about watching your children open gifts on Christmas morning. Our family gathers around the tree to open presents after we attend Mass and after we sing Happy Birthday to baby Jesus in the manger. We make it a point to explain to our children that Christmas is all about the birth of Jesus and that he is truly the best gift that we will ever receive.
As a parent, giving Christmas gifts is a balancing act of wanting to make sure that our children don’t focus entirely on receiving gifts, while still giving them things that they will truly enjoy and get excited about opening on Christmas morning. I try to keep that in mind myself as my husband and I discuss and shop for our children’s Christmas gifts.
I must admit that shopping is not one of my favorite things to do, especially as prices rise and there is already so much to do regularly, it can feel overwhelming at times.
One of my favorite things to do, however, is to create lists. To-do lists, shopping lists, cooking/baking ingredient lists. You name it. Each year, before Advent, I make Christmas gift lists for our children based on what they’ve expressed to us that they would like and what we think that they would enjoy as well.
A little gift I give to myself is to try to get the majority, if not all, of my Christmas shopping done before Advent begins so that I can make room in my mind, heart and soul for the real reason for the season.
The internet has made it so easy to shop for my family and support Catholic companies at the same time. While our children also enjoy receiving presents that are not from Catholic-owned companies, we try to support Catholic companies as much as possible. Plus, when you are supporting a Catholic company, you are in a way supporting the Church. As Saint Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12: 12-13 “For as the body is one, and hath many members; and all the members of the body, whereas they are many, yet are one body, so also is Christ. For in one Spirit, we were all baptized into one body.”
Below are some wonderful Catholic companies to shop at all year, but especially at Christmastime.
