Coach Cooley is Grateful to Divine Providence

On February 26, the Providence College Friars sealed their first victory as regular season champions in the Big East Conference. The excitement from the stands from faithful Friars’ fans magnified an already exceptional season, which would lead the team all the way to the “Sweet Sixteen” in the NCAA tournament for the first time in twenty-five years.
Aside from outstanding talent, especially among the senior class, Providence benefits from its head coach, Ed Cooley, a master of the art of servant-leadership. After their regular season victory over Creighton, Cooley commented, “Everything was divine providence that we won today. This isn’t a win for our program. This is a win for our city. This is a win for our state.”
Ed Cooley could have boasted about the excellence exuded by him and his team, and rightly so. Instead, he turned the attention beyond himself and towards God. Cooley humbly accepted the win as an honor for the city and the state which contributed to his own formation as a youth. In this great city, and at the school which bears its name, Cooley can help shape others as servant-leaders who proclaim the truth and goodness of Divine Providence. Hopefully that comes with another victorious season next year at the Dunk.
