Diocese awarding a piece of history to major donors in cathedral towers restoration project

PROVIDENCE — Although the scaffolding has come down on the largest exterior renovation project in the history of the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, those who would like to support this project with a significant donation to the renewal effort still have the opportunity to bring a piece of that storied history into their own homes.
Individuals donating $5,000 or more toward either the repair or replacement of the stones on the façade of the cathedral or its towers will receive a commemorative plaque containing an actual piece of the cathedral’s signature brownstone removed during the project.
“It is a sign of the Diocese of Providence’s recognition for that level of generosity,” said Msgr. Raymond B. Bastia, diocesan Vicar of Finance.
“Fundraising for the project has been successful and we’re encouraged by the generous response to date.”
The acrylic plaque is etched with an image of the cathedral and a message of gratitude from the diocese for the donor’s generosity in support of the project.
“The piece of brownstone encapsulated within the plaque functioned for more than 130 years as part of the façade of the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Providence,” Msgr. Bastia said. “It stood in strength and public witness to those whose faith, foresight and generosity created this magnificent house of worship.”
“As it was removed due to wear from its function, the stone is provided to major donors as a commemoration of their generous contributions to ensure the future hallowed worship of God in this place for generations to come.”
