Franciscan Missionaries of Mary find joy in garden inspired by Laudato Si’

NORTH PROVIDENCE — The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary of Fruit Hill in North Providence have been watching their garden grow. Sister Mary Petrosky and Sister Beatrice Costagliola, were inspired to plant a flower garden on the fifth anniversary of the publication of Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home.”
“Throughout the encyclical, Pope Francis’ words read like a lyrical echo of the holy man of Assisi who regarded the lowliest flower or insect, a thing of wonder and awe,” said Sister Costagliola. “Throughout its pages we are constantly put in touch with the divine and come to recognize ourselves as part of the interconnectedness of our beautiful planet.
The sisters explained that they have been delighted in watching the bright marigolds, petunias, zinnias draw the attention of butterflies and bees.
“Despite the hard labor involved in planting and weeding, this plot has become a source of joy and never ceases to lift our spirits.” said Sister Costagliola.

The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary welcome all to their garden, 399 Fruit Hill Ave., North Providence, in hopes that they will also find joy and God’s love in creation. For more information on The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, please visit fmmusa.org or call (401) 353-5800.
