St. Patrick Academy brings warmth to the homeless

PROVIDENCE — St. Patrick Academy is ensuring students continue with the tradition of service for others and to the community, despite COVID-19’s impact on many of the typical activities they complete.
St. Patrick pastor, Father James Ruggieri, and members of the parish community go weekly to feed the homeless around Providence.
Typically, students in Club 3107, a service club, assist on at least one of these trips each week. However, due to COVID-19, students have not been able to join the pastor on the food truck.
Looking for a way to continue to help despite COVID restrictions, the St. Patrick Academy Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) chose to partner with Blankets of Hope, an educational nonprofit organization helping students practice empathy and kindness by donating blankets — each paired with an inspirational handwritten note — to those experiencing homelessness.
Each member of the NHS wrote thoughtful, caring letters to those who would receive the blankets and attached them with ribbon, including juniors Tahj and Arianna, who helped NHS President Danny tie notes to the individual blankets.
Thanks to both Blankets of Hope and the St. Patrick Academy National Honor Society, Father Ruggieri was able to deliver more than 90 blankets to those in need.
