PROVIDENCE — It was an observance that was both solemn and hopeful for Catholics.
On All Soul’s Day, Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, wearing black vestments as a symbol of our sadness and sorrow, offered prayers for all those in the diocese who have died in the past year.
He also remembered in a special way those who have died from COVID-19, and those who could not have traditional funeral rites during the health restrictions imposed earlier this year.
“Today, and throughout this month, we pray in a particular way for all the faithful departed. We pray that God will purify them, forgive them for their sins and lift them up to the glory and the joy of heaven,” Bishop Tobin said.
He added that the day has a more personal meaning as well.
“We remembered with love those we have lost, and we think especially of members of our families, our friends and our associates, perhaps our parents or grandparents, a spouse, dear friend or relative, those who were very close to us, those who were so good to us. Those who gave so much for us. It is very important for us to keep their memories alive,” Bishop Tobin said.
“We miss their presence, but we are also comforted knowing their suffering is over, that they have succeeded in their journey here on earth, and they are in perfect peace and joy in God’s presence in the Kingdom of Heaven.”
