NEWPORT — Reverend Raymond C. Theroux, 85, pastor emeritus of St. John Vianney Parish, Cumberland, died on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at St. Clare Home in Newport. Born in West Warwick to the late Louis J. and Madeleine C. (Phaneuf) Theroux, he is survived by his brother, Msgr. Paul D. Theroux, a nephew Michael D. Miner (Mary Louise), and two nieces Diane E. Mihailides (George) and Carolyn M. Higgins (Michael). He is predeceased by two sisters, Claire T. Miner (Gerald) and Lucille J. Theroux.
Father Theroux attended St. John the Baptist School in West Warwick and LaSalle Academy in Providence. In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Our Lady of Providence Seminary, Warwick, and St. Paul’s Seminary in Ottawa, Canada.
He was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1965, by the Most Reverend Russell J. McVinney. After ordination, he served in parish ministry at St. Francis of Assisi, Wakefield; Our Lady of Mercy, East Greenwich; SS. John and Paul, Coventry; Precious Blood, Woonsocket; St. Cecilia, Pawtucket; St. John the Baptist, Pawtucket and St. John Vianney in Cumberland, where he served as pastor for twenty eight years before retiring as Pastor Emeritus and becoming the resident chaplain to St. Clare Home in Newport.
Additionally, Father Theroux served as a dean and as a member of the diocesan Priests’ Personnel Board and of the Council of Priests and College of Consultors.
A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Saturday, Dec. 28 followed by burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Warwick.
