Robert “Rocket” McCarthy

WESTPORT, Mass. — Robert “Rocket” McCarthy, 78, of Westport, peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Constance “Connie” (Dufault) McCarthy.
Bob was born in Fall River, son of the late John and Margaret (Scanlon) McCarthy and had resided in Westport for most of his life. A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he served his country overseas stationed in Berlin, Germany with the Intelligence Unit.
Bob was a proud graduate of Salve Regina University where he earned his masters degree in Criminal Justice. He retired as a Lieutenant in the Massachusetts State Police and had also taught at various Massachusetts police academies. He then took on a second career as Director of Education and Compliance for the Diocese of Providence.
Bob had many hobbies including fly fishing, hunting, and reading multiple daily newspapers. Bob enjoyed annual trips with friends to Major League Baseball parks across the country, something he looked forward to for many years. He also served on numerous committees in Westport and was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Bristol County. He especially loved attending his grandchildren’s events, such as sports and performances.
Survivors along with his wife include his son: Bryan C. McCarthy and his wife Tammy, of Westport; his daughter Amy J. Rodrigues and her husband John of Westport; sister Janice McCarthy of Westport; six grandchildren, Brian, Jacquelyn, Ava, Collin, Brady and Maddox; along with a niece and two nephews.
Funeral services were private.
