Sister Audrey Blake, R.S.M.

CUMBERLAND – Mercy Sister Audrey Blake, 89, formerly Sister Mary Wilhelmina, a retired educator and administrator, died March 13 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Baptized Audrey Jeanette Blake, she was born in Newport, and was the daughter of the late William J. and Margaret (Harrington) Blake.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1940 and professed her vows on August 16, 1946. Sister Blake earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence, a Master of Arts degree from The Catholic University of America, Washington, and completed post-graduate studies in theology at Xavier University.

She ministered as a teacher at the former St. Mary School in Pawtucket, St. Patrick School in Providence, and St. Xavier Academy in Providence, as well as at St. Mary Academy-Bay View in East Providence, Salve Regina University, Mercymount Country Day School in Cumberland, and Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, Mass. She also served as executive director of the diocesan Advisory Council of Religious. In her later years, Sister Blake was secretary for the Community Visiting Nurses Association of Attleboro, Mass.

Sister Blake was the sister of the late Ann Cullen, Margaret Milnor, Catherine Xavier, Eleanor Sheehy, Rita Phillips, Mary Theresa Blake, John J. Blake, and William J. Blake. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 16 at Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
