Sister Mary Raymond Patton, R.S.M., 102

CUMBERLAND — Mercy Sister Mary Raymond Patton, 102, a Sister of Mercy for almost 83 years and a retired educator, died Feb. 15 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine E. (Gillogly) Patton, and was baptized Catherine M. Patton.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy on July 2, 1928 and professed her vows on August 17, 1934. Sister Patton was a graduate of the former St. Xavier Academy in Providence, Class of 1927. She earned a bachelor of science degree and a master’s degree in education from the former Catholic Teachers College, Providence.

Sister Patton began her educational ministry at the former Cleary School, Providence where she taught for 6 years. She was then assigned to St. Mary School, Pawtucket, the former St. Matthew School, Cranston, and several other schools in the Diocese of Providence. In 1971 she was appointed to teach at St. Mary Academy-Bay View where she remained until her retirement in 1987. Sister Patton taught thousands of students during her 56 years in education.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and was the sister of the late Francis, George, Thomas, Bernard, John and Raymond Patton, Theresa Kelly and Mercy Sister M. Norbertine Patton.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 19 in Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery,
