HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, NY — Congregation of Notre Dame Sister Rose McDonnell, 90, died March 6 at Andrus-on-Hudson, where she had been a resident since 2004. She was formerly known in religion as Mother St. Rose of Mary.
Born in Providence, she was a graduate of St. Mary School and St. Mary Academy of the Visitation. She was professed as a member of the Congregation de Notre Dame in August 1943 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She ministered as a high school teacher and college professor for more than 50 years.
After Sister McDonnell retired from teaching, she served as a pastoral assistant at St. Martha Parish, East Providence, and was very active in the pro-life movement in the Diocese of Providence. In 1998, she retired to Ridgefield, CT and subsequently moved to Andrus-on-Hudson.
Sister Rose was predeceased by her brothers John McDonnell and Dominican Father Henry McDonnell.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 10 at St. Ann Church, Yonkers, NY. Burial was in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury, CT.
