Fall Tours of historic Newport cemetery
NEWPORT — The public is invited to take a tour of the Saint Joseph Cemetery, the final resting place of many of Newport’s early Irish immigrants and the site of Rhode Island’s first Catholic church. The tours of approximately 30 minutes in length, plus time for Q&A, will be given, weather permitting, by local historian and guide, Steve Marino, on the following Sundays at 1 p.m.: September 11 and 25, October 9 and 30. There is no fee charged, but reservations are requested. Come learn about this site, the “birthplace” of Rhode Island’s first Catholic parish. The site was restored by the Museum of Newport Irish History in 1998-99, and the cemetery was rededicated in March 1999 by Bishop Robert Mulvee. Polish Family Festival
CENTRAL FALLS — The Polish Family Festival at St. Joseph’s Church, 391 High St., will be held Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10 from 6 p.m. – 12 a.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 11 from noon – 6 p.m. The festival is held in the parish parking lot. Polish food will be available inside the parish center, across the street from the church. Entertainment includes a Polish Band and DJ. There will be various raffles, a pastry booth, a special raffle, special prizes and pictures with Santa. Holy Hour for Our Nation
EAST PROVIDENCE — A Holy Hour for Our Nation will be held on Monday, Sept. 12, in remembrance of the events of 9/11, at St. Martha’s Church, 2595 Pawtucket Ave., 6:30 p.m. The reflection will be “A Catholic Response to American Wokeness,” and include prayer of the Rosary; Chaplet of Divine Mercy; Prayer for the USA; Benediction; and Enrollment in Brown Scapular. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola Retreat
WEST WARWICK — Called by Name Ministry is offering “The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola — A Retreat in Daily Life.” This is a lived experience of praying, meditating and reflecting on Scripture in order to grow in union with God and to discern God’s will. Bereavement Ministry
PROVIDENCE — The Bereavement Ministry of St. Pius V. parish will sponsor an eight-week support group for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. The group will give participants a safe and sacred space in which to learn about grief and to share their grief experiences. Meetings will be held at St. Pius V. Church on Thursdays, from September 8 through October 27, from 7-8 p.m. There is no fee but pre-registration is required. West Bay Chorale welcomes new singers for the 2022-2023 concert season
WARWICK — The West Bay Chorale welcomes new singers for the 2022-2023 concert season. The multi-generational group performs music from the renaissance to contemporary. Sacred Heart School Players to present Jewel of India
EAST PROVIDENCE — Sacred Heart School Players to present Jewel of India, an original script about St. Teresa of Calcutta, in the church hall, 118 Taunton Ave., on September 16 and 17 at 6 p.m., and September 18 at 1 p.m. This original play was written and directed by faculty member Karen Nerney.
