RIVERSIDE — St. Mary Academy-Bay View senior Brooke Newbury has been selected as a semifinalist in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
With this selection, Newbury is among less than one percent of high school seniors in the United States, chosen for their exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. More than 1.5 million juniors from around 21,000 high schools vied for entrance into the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Newbury started at Bay View in Grade 9 and has taken full advantage of everything Bay View has to offer — including rigorous courses, performing arts, athletics and clubs. She is an All-State percussionist, captain of the cross-country team and member of the Mock Trial team.
Newbury also exemplifies our Mercy values through the considerable amount of volunteer work she does. She was the recipient of the Clara Barton Award this summer for her work with the American Red Cross and is the Youth Advocate Lead for Water With Blessings, an organization that provides water filtration systems to mothers around the world.
“I am so grateful for the inspiring teachers, dedicated administration and supportive girls that make up our school community,” Newbury said. “I am proud to represent Bay View in the National Merit competition.”
