PROVIDENCE — Laughter and little footsteps echoed through the halls of St. Pius V School on August 25 as students raced to embrace the Dominican Sisters, kicking off the new academic year with an orientation and ice cream social. The building quickly buzzed with energy—polite, eager faces filling the corridors, ready for the year ahead.

While children crowded around the sisters, eighth graders were already buzzing about the upcoming March musical, and parents settled into the comforting reassurance of their choice for their children’s education and formation. Carrying arms full of fresh supplies to each classroom, new families connected with teachers, administration, and the sisters to discover the vibrant school community awaiting them.

Principal Sr. Mary Amata Mueller, O.P., announced this year’s guiding theme: “Living the Glorious Freedom of the Children of God.” With Christ at the focal point, the school year begins with strong momentum across academics, catechesis, and an unwavering, supportive community life.

Father John Maria Devaney, O.P. the school’s Pastor shared his intentions going into this year.

“My greatest hope is that our students and families grow in their faith each year, also that they would find the Catholic school environment one of family and faith… we understand as a community that choosing Catholic school is a sacrifice, with realizing that we understand it is the best investment into our children and their future,” Father DeVaney said.

“The Friars and sisters and lay faculty will bring the spirit of St. Aquinas and his love of learning to the continued charism and education of St. Pius.”

St. Pius V School has created an environment of home, community, and dedication to achievement and holy integrity in their students and staff.

Ealish Brawley, advancement director, attributes much of their success to the dedication of the families, highlighting the whole community’s collaboration and support for each other.

Maureen Wilkins, catechist and receptionist, said, “It is the warmth, the friendliness, the collaboration of parents and staff; everyone here supports each other.”

Every parent and teacher were in agreement that their number one goal is to instill the love of Jesus into every student. Allyse Gruslin, mother of three, shared that it really comes down to the Catechesis of the Good Shephed that sets St.Pius apart.

Bill Harried, a parent, raved about the influence of the Dominican sisters.

“The real thing that sold it for us was coming here, seeing the sisters… they are young, on fire, excited sisters, excited to teach.”

“My friends, and Sister Mary Barbara teaches us math that we like,” one third-grader said of his favorite thing about his school.

St. Pius V School is a vibrant, close-knit community of dedicated families, religious, and staff—including multi-generational families with third-generation students.

“Together, our shared commitment to St. Pius V fuels an exciting year ahead as we form sharp minds and joyful little warriors for Christ,” Father Devaney said.
