St. Rose of Lima School students celebrate World Down Syndrome Day to raise awareness and show kindness is cool

With the support of Principal Kim Izzi and Pastor Father Matt Glover, students at St. Rose of Lima School in Warwick participated in the “Rock Your Socks” event in honor of World Down Syndrome Day, in an effort to reinforce that being unique is a good thing. The Kindness Club was started by Sarah Powers, the school counselor and reading teacher, and with the help of Lisa Horton, special educator and Jen Liddle, third grade teacher, they are encouraging students to perform random acts of kindness and promoting the treatment of everyone with respect and dignity, despite differences. By celebrating World Down Syndrome Day, on March 21, and other activities during Kindness Club, the goal is to teach students that people with Down syndrome are not so different. By educating children at a young age about individuals who have a variety of abilities, St. Rose of Lima School is teaching students to be compassionate, patient and kind.
