PROVIDENCE — The Diocese of Providence will soon embark on a powerful and visible moment of evangelization, an opportunity for the local Church to go forth and joyfully proclaim Jesus through the loving intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On Saturday, Oct. 18, the Great Marian Procession will take place through the city’s streets. Led by Bishop Bruce A. Lewandowski, C.Ss.R, the walk will begin at St. Mary Church, 538 Broadway, and will process to the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, 30 Fenner St., Providence, where Bishop Lewandowski will celebrate Mass followed by fellowship in the lower cathedral.

The Marian Procession will be a public expression of the Catholic faith in the Ocean State, explained Celso Vera, coordinator of the diocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry.
“It honors Our Lady, glorifies God, and allows the people of God to witness their devotion visibly. It is very powerful,” he said. “Through this procession, we aim to showcase the beauty of our diverse cultures, the richness of our Marian devotions, and the unity of our Church as we journey together with Mary toward her son, Jesus.”
This special event welcomes the participation of every Marian advocate in the diocese — including parishes, schools, Catholic organizations, students, families and individuals. Anyone with a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary is warmly invited to participate.
Vera shared that the organizing committee has high expectations for this year’s event, noting the importance of the procession taking place in a Jubilee Year. By participating in the procession, attending Mass, and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the faithful may obtain a plenary indulgence as part of this Holy Year, themed “Pilgrims of Hope.”
“Last year, we saw strong participation from various Marian devotions and parishes, and we hope to see even greater involvement this time — from more parishes and Marian movements.”
