SAINTS

St. Engelmaro

Posted

Another saint associated with good weather is St. Engelmaro (11th century). He was born to a poor peasant family. He lived as a hermit in the forest near Passau, Germany. His reputation for holiness and wisdom spread and the people of the region would often come to him for advice. Engelmaro was murdered by a man who was jealous of his popularity. When he killed him, he hid the body in a snow drift. The body was not discovered until the spring thaw. His relics were transferred to a church in Windberg, Germany in 1331, where a custom developed called “searching for Engelmaro,” where villagers go in search for the saint’s body, find it (the relics) and then take the relics in procession from the forest back to the town.
